Sticks and Stones...

Sticks and Stones… I saw an anti bullying poster, sticks and stones may break my bones but bullying can be fatal.

I remember my grandmother telling me a similar rhyme when I was younger, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me! ” What a load of rubbish (the rhyme not the poster)!

I am sure it was well meant but words can and do hurt us and in a way we may never fully appreciate.

A flippant remark from a parent or teacher who may never remember saying it can cause lasting damage. It is possible we may never recall who said it, but once said we convince ourselves we are not good enough or may never amount to anything…

I was watching a lady on a ‘get fit’ program a while a go; as they unraveled why she had a weight problem and the reasons behind her not eating with her family; she suddenly blurted out that a teacher had told her she was ‘fat’ and that she would never be healthy’. She then said ‘I have never told anyone that’.

Guess what, the teacher was right, she carried out their instruction and this lovely lady became bigger and more unhealthy as the years went on. She had gone through life believing it.

Because of the way we learn, we take on board negative statements as real beliefs. We love our children and would never want any harm to come to them so choose your words wisely, especially those under the age of 10.
